African Photo Safari – Self Guide or Group Photographers Safari

When planning your first African photo safari you have several options; you can book a specific “photographers safari” 12-18 months in advance, or you can do the research on the various safari camps then request a guide who has a serious interest in photography or is a photographer himself, or you can do a self drive, restricted to the tar road you take your chances of finding the animals near the road.
We decided to do the research and found a private game reserve that borders Kruger National Park. Tanda Tula located in the Timbavati Game Reserve. Sitting along a river bed it attracts the full spectrum of predators and prey. Our strategy involved being on game drives with the Tanda Tula guide ( when we booked we told them that we were photographers and if possible would like to have a guide who is a photographer – this we found out is not that uncommon ) for 5 days then on the 6th day we rented a private vehicle with guide who would take us anywhere we wanted. The private outing allowed us to get out, walk around, get up close and feel the bush under our feet. It was great to spend an hour in one location exploring all the wonderful details of the Lowveld and its fauna and flora. Highly recommended to get shots you might not have gotten earlier.
